Abstract
There has been a growing interest in utilizing the microvascular surgical technique for reconstruction after head and neck cancer surgeries. Even though this involves such a long and complicated operative course, the concept of the free tissue transfer as a single stage surgery is gaining popularity.
We are presenting recent experiences (Sep. 1, 90-Aug. 1, 91) of free tissue transfer for the reconstruction after various head and neck cancer surgeries at the Korea Univ. Hospital. Of 12 patients in whom a free tissue transfer was used, 9 patients has free radial forearm flap for intraoral reconstruction including 2 cases of osteocutaneous flap for simultaneous mandibular reconstruction ; 2 patients had free rectus abdominis muscle flat with skin graft for the defects after the combined orbital exenteration and maxillectomy ; and one patient had a free rectus myocutaneous flap for the defect after the resection of the ear and the surrounding temporal region.
The use of the free radial forearm flap and the free rectus muscle flap in 12 clinical cases is discussed and evaluated.
